In the eighth over, with India at 17 for 2, Kohli edged his first delivery from Scott Boland towards second slip. Steve Smith dived low to his right, appearing to catch the ball just above the ground before it popped out and was caught by Marnus Labuschagne at gully. The Australian team celebrated, believing they had dismissed Kohli for a first-ball duck.
However, the on-field umpires referred the decision to the third umpire, Joel Wilson, to determine if the catch was clean. After reviewing multiple replays, Wilson concluded that the ball had made contact with the ground before Smith gained full control, leading to a ‘not out’ decision. This ruling allowed Kohli to continue his innings, much to the frustration of the Australian side.
Steve Smith, interviewed during the lunch break, expressed his disagreement with the decision, stating, “100%, no denying it whatsoever,” when asked if he believed he had caught the ball cleanly. He added, “But the umpire’s made the decision, and we move on.”
The incident has sparked widespread debate among cricket fans and analysts, with opinions divided on the legitimacy of the catch. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting suggested that Smith’s fingers appeared to be under the ball, indicating a clean catch. However, the third umpire’s decision was based on the available video evidence, which he deemed inconclusive to overturn the on-field call.
This event has added to the ongoing discussions about the clarity and consistency of catch rulings in cricket, especially concerning low catches where the ball’s contact with the ground is challenging to ascertain definitively.
